Menzies Campbell, too old?
Francesca Preece,
Politics Editor, assesses the prospect of Libdems Leader Menzies Campbell.
EIGHT months into
the job and still Menzies or "Ming" Campbell cannot run from the age
question. Is 65 old in politics? While actors and catwalk models are stamped
with a sell-by date, with forty years plus considered the end of your prime,
in politics, the story is very different. Just by leafing through the text
books, you can see that politicians come from all ages.
William Pitt, the
Younger was 24 when he came to lead but Viscount Palmerston stood as PM at
the ripe old age of 71. Morarji Ranchhodji Desai, former Indian PM, was 81.
The point is that age is not as important as actual ability to run the
country smoothly, to sort out the occasional hiccups and be in firm control.
Being of "sound mind" does not go down too badly either, apparently as Mr
Blair says. In politics, honesty and capability are preferred by most
voters.
Let's face it,
politicians are not your average beauties - they are not paid by the hour to
pout and look pretty for the camera. (Although that tactic does seem to be
practised) In September's Liberal Democrat Conference, held at Brighton,
Ming
demonstrated that
he has what it takes to lead even if old. Earlier attempts by his spin
doctors to give him a youthful appearance failed hands down. Standing with
young female members only helps to show just how old you really are. That
surely is not the best way to go to prove you are hip and happening either.
In Brighton, Ming showed his party how age can indeed fit in the equation.
Set to be the subject of ridicule after party splits over his tax reform
plans, Ming appeared with a united front and even his predecessor, Charles
Kennedy, raised his hand in support. While "Call Me Dave" Cameron has the
house wives' attention, retirement rebel Ming has one quality Cameron does
not - age - and with it comes experience. His keynote speech, envisaging a
"free, fair and green Britain", was met with "so much applause", according
to Lembit Opik, Montgomeryshire MP. Lembit added: "The boy's done good."
Perhaps, Michael Howard and former BBC newsreader Anna Ford, could have
taken tips from dear old Ming on how to beat the age critics. And then
there's the business of lacking the nack for technology.
While Cameron
pranced about with i.pod in hand, claiming he was a major fan of teen
sensation Artic Monkeys, poor Ming had little to offer on this spectrum. But
what Ming lacks in technology, he lacks even further in polls. BBC's
Newsnight launched their own ICM poll, asking the dreaded question who is
the better leader for the party. Not surprisingly, Ming did not fare
particularly well, just scraping 26%, while predecessor Kennedy got over
half votes cast. Well at least he has his fans elsewhere. Both senior
mediums, Reuters and Financial Times believe that he is
"statesmanlike,
experienced and can hold the party together." We wait and watch. Can Ming
possibly survive? Judging by his five minute standing ovation after his
first speech, he seems to be already on his way. PL
