Poetry School and the Ledbury Poetry Festival

Saturday 12th May

Welcome
Coffee and tea available in Burgage Hall
From 12:30pm

 1:30pm to 4:30pm (Writing Workshop)
The Sound of Sense with Matthew Hollis
Have you ever listened into a conversation behind a closed door? Then have you noticed how we can often understand the meaning of the words even when they cannot be clearly understood? For Robert Frost this is 'the sound of sense', a tonal imprint that we recognize subconsciously, and which takes us to the very root of poetry. Looking at examples this class will explore the sensory properties that make a poem move with intelligibility.
£30, £20 concessions

5:30pm to 6:30pm (Talk)
Getting To The Roots with Graham Fawcett
If you ask poets where their roots are, they're just as likely to answer Shakespeare as Yorkshire. But what is this rootedness? A desire for a lost Arcadia or the sap of identity? Graham Fawcett travels the pastoral tradition and comes across poems by Auden, Barrett Browning, Frost, Hardy, Masefield, Edward Thomas, Wordsworth and Yeats on the way.
£9, £7 concessions

8:15pm (Reading)
Matthew Hollis and Gillian Clarke
£9, £7 concessions

Sunday 13th  May

10:00am to 12:30pm Walk

Go Back To The Nourishing Earth with Graham Fawcett
Auden's Registry Office, Masefield's childhood home and baptismal church, Barrett Browning's childhood Shangri-La, and the neighbouring houses where Robert Frost and EdwardThomas shared a pre-war summer are all on the route of Graham Fawcett's walk, during which poets' lives and poems will be recreated on location in Ledbury and the surrounding countryside.
£15, £12.50 concessions
(please meet under the Market House at 10am promptly)

2:00pm to 5:00pm Writing Workshop
Belonging with Gillian Clarke
In this workshop we'll each try to find our own voice by returning to first things: first words, first language, first meaning. Over that first language we havelayered many others, but if we arehonest, somewherein the instinct, in the mind, we can each find the authentic 'voice' that makes real poetry truly original.
£30, £20 concessions

All events, apart from the Sunday morning walk, will be held in historic
Burgage Hall, located in the centre of town.

The PoetrySchool is pleased to offer a weekend discount for all five events: £85, £80 concessions.

Poet's Letter Poetry Performance and Live Music Series

Founded, hosted, presented and read by Poet's Letter Magazine Editor Munayem Mayenin, this series was founded in March 2005 and has become an essential and well established poetry and live music event of London live poetry and music scene. A lot of American and European poets have so far read with us in addition to our well established Panel of English poets writing today. Yet Poet's Letter always offered a greater emphasis and focus in presenting young and emerging voices.

Our Panel of Poets: Eva Salzman, Mimi Khalvati, Munayem Mayenin, Carole Baldock, Cheryl Follon, Todd Swift, Kona Macphee, Julia Copus, Carrie Etter, Choman Hardi, Jim Bennett, Isobel Dixon, Malgorzata Kitowski, Luke Wright,  Helen Ivory, Kerry-Fleur Schleifer, Jude Simpson, Martin Figura, Dr Roi Ankhkara Kwabena, Dr Charles Bennett, Philip Ruthen, Nnorom Azuonye, Paul Taylor, Maggie Sullivan, Inua Ellams, Joshua Idehen, Sarah Wardle, Tom Chivers, Juli Jeana, Tricia Peak, Briony Dennis, Girija Shettar, Alan Buckley, and Paivi Payne.

We have Kerry-Fleur Schleifer, David Pelling and other musicians making music as much part of the series as poetry. Poet's Letter magnetises the space with poetry and music to create a community of people in love with life and through poetry and music they live in a communal vibrant connections in a to life and living. Join us and be part of this magic. It is no pop, no stand up comedy, or cheap politiscope,  or definitely not a float in the market's boat: it is magic of poetry and music blended in when people spark the space with human warmth, openness, friendship and oneness.

"The Poet’s Letter evening had a genuinely warm, friendly vibe, which distinguishes it instantly from the vast majority of poetry events on offer. Here, poetry is presented in a context that is both human and, importantly, accessible." Sophia Furber: London Student Magazine

Our event takes place every second Monday at the Poetry Cafe, 22 Covent Garden (Nearest Tube) at 7 pm. If first or second Monday falls in a Bank Holiday we move to the third Monday.

There is an Open Mic session for budding poets to join and read.

Tickets: 5/3 (cons)

Poet's Letter is a living thing, a community thing and a wonder thing: together. And it is an English thing, a British thing, a European thing as well as a Humanity thing since we are the Humanion peopling this small Planet in this sun-sunk, moon-lit, motion-mounted, space-bloomed place, Sunnara, in the province of of Milky Way Galaxy that belongs to an Infinite Country: The Universe. Welcome onboard this platform of Universal Humanion.

Nothing is built without toils and one cannot claim that they have built  something until they have toiled for it with a faith, a conviction and with the power of their dreams! We are trying to build something at Poet's Letter: all you can do is be a part of it: rain in your support, bring in your wind and seasons, soil in your faith and conviction and let us build together something deeper than ourselves and bigger than the corporations and their offspring: money!

In Publication Since March 2004
