Poet's Letter 2nd London Poetry Festival 2006

August 23 Wednesday

The London Poetry Festival 2006 grew out of The Poet's Letter Magazine Poetry Performance Series that started last year. Our Performance Series grew into its second year and still growing in strength. We had the first Festival at The Poetry Cafe in last August where many of our panel of poets took part as well as a lot of other poets published in the Magazine and The Poet's Letter Poetry Anthology of New Voices. We had a great memorable event.

We thought this could become a regular Annual Poetry Festival in London, a celebration of Contemporary English Poetry. Therefore here we are with the second Festival and this year the Festival is taking place at The Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts (RADA) on 14th August Monday:  6:30-10:30 pm.

We are hoping to get most, if not all, of the poets in our panel of poets including: Mimi Khalvati, Cheryl Follon, Munayem Mayenin, Isobel Dixon,  Carole Baldock, Helen Ivory,  Martin Figura, Carrie Etter, Phillip Ruthen (Confirmed), Julia Copus, Kona Macphee, Choman Hardi, Jim Bennett, Todd Swift, Eva Salzman, Luke Wright, Jude Simpson  and Johnny Vallon  and Paivi Payne (Music). We are of course trying to get other poets too. We will update this page as we progress. To find out more about the Poets joining the Festival please go to or to read their works please go to

A taste of Arabic poetry and fiction in translation – Banipal Live 2006!

Four pre-eminent young Arab writers will be touring the UK this August. Poets Joumana Haddad from Lebanon and Abed Ismael from Syria together with fiction writers Ala Hlehel from Palestine and Mansoura Ez-Eldin from Egypt offer an entirely fresh perspective on daily life in the Arab world through performance-readings and live discussions.

The tour runs from 14-20 August, visiting London, Chesterfield, Derby, Manchester, South Shields and the Edinburgh International Book Festival. As the tour heads north, borrowers at selected libraries en route will be reading, discussing and enjoying the best of Arab literature in English translation in a pioneering readers' project.

Banipal Live 2006 is a partnership of Banipal Magazine, the British Council and the Reading Agency.

For dates and details of the tour, press enquiries or selected invitations to the authors' welcome party in London, email

Runnymede International Literature Festival

Thursday 2 March - Sunday April 23 2006
Patron: Andrew Motion Poet Laureate

Core artistic programme Thursday 20 April - Saturday 22 April
Community and education activities Thursday 2 March - Saturday 22 April
St George's Day Community Festival & Showcase at The Pleasure Grounds Sunday 23 April

As a significant development in THE SOUTH's community and education (CO-ED) activities, we're delighted to announce our involvement in setting up Runnymede International Literary Festival in association with Royal Holloway, University of London, Runnymede Borough Council and LCACE London Centre for the Arts and Cultural Enterprise.

With the underlying theme 'seeing differently', the festival will showcase leading authors and poets including Andrew Motion and Jo Shapcott. But in the month leading up to the festival (from March 11) local people will be the stars. There will be a wide range of community and education activities aimed at involving all ages, abilities and backgrounds. There's a weekend of prestige literary events at Royal Holloway 20-22 April and a St George's Day Community Festival at the Pleasure Grounds on Sunday 23 April - which also happens to be Shakespeare's birthday!
